"That's the same as a traffic offense." According to Fish and Wildlife Service data obtained by Greenwire, federal agents have seized 16,885 ivory specimens and an additional 92 kilograms of elephant ivory since 1999. But criminal charges are rare. The average sentence for getting caught with ivory: three days in jail, five days of probation and a $320 fine.
