For environmentalist Laurie Barr, the Allegheny's an accident waiting to happen. On a recent visit, Barr pointed to a mound of spent charcoal just 30 feet from the gray pipe of a gas well poking out of the ground. "People don't know the difference between a clearing for a well and a clearing for a campsite," she said. "It just confounds me that the forest hasn't blown up yet."
